Rehabilitation Hospital of Northern Indiana

Rehabilitation Hospital of Northern Indiana

The Vibra Rehabilitation Hospital in Mishawaka has finally opened it’s doors! The two-story, 56,500 square foot facility located just across the street from Saint Joseph Hospital by Edison Lakes, houses 40 beds for patients who are going through rehabilitation from stroke, brain injury, amputation and a range of medical conditions.

This stunning facility has lots of open spaces for rehab equipment with floor to ceiling windows for patients to be able to feel like they are enjoying the outdoors. The skills labs are equipped with kitchen and laundry appliances, as well as other home related spaces to help adapt to typical day-to-day living. The patient bedrooms have their own ensuite bathrooms where they can also relearn how to engage in self care and hygiene practices. Facilities like this are much needed to help people recover from complicated medical issues, where they can stay longer than a typical hospital would keep them.

The Rescue Mission Honors Donor With Naming Rights

As our project at The Rescue Mission in downtown Fort Wayne finishes up, they’ve got an announcement to make – A major donor was honored today with the reveal of his name on the side of their building! With a longstanding history in relations with The Rescue Mission and a heartwarming story to go along with it, the W. Paul Wolf Rescue Mission was shown off with pride. The new facility is just about ready for move-in, which will take place later this summer. We can’t wait to show this space off to the public – a much needed asset to our downtown community. As things finish up over the next couple of months, keep an eye out as we’ll be showcasing the vast differences between the old space and the new. Congratulations!

Byron Wellness Community Nearing Completion: Drone View

Check out those neighborhoods! ?️ ? ?

The residents and staff at Byron Wellness Community will be moving into their new digs next week! Take a look at that beautiful campus, where residents will have their OWN rooms, with their OWN bathrooms (something many of them have never experienced!) and even their own green spaces allowing them to spend time outside without needing a staff member to accompany them.

We are so excited for the increased quality of life for the whole Byron Health Center family, as they finally move into the state-of-the-art facility they deserve, to match their state-of-the-art quality of care they provide. Congratulations! ?

In Loving Memory of Robert M. Weigand

We are saddened to announce the passing of Robert M. Weigand, the patriarch of the Weigand Construction family. He passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family Wednesday, and was just 2 months away from his 90th birthday. As owner of the company for 23 years, with an active philanthropic spirit, he was truly passionate about the impact of our community through our construction efforts. He lead many landmark projects for our company, including office buildings, manufacturing, k-12 education, upper education, and churches. Considered a true gentleman in the construction industry, Bob had many long standing relationships in business and personally throughout our region. Even after retirement, he was always a fixture in the office that offered a smile in the hall, and served as a valued consultant that everyone loved to stop in and talk to. His support and dedication will be sorely missed around the office. We are saddened by his loss, however, we are also incredibly grateful for having such an amazing leader throughout the years.

Obituary – Robert M. Weigand (May 10, 1930 – March 11, 2020)

On March 11, 2020, the Good Lord called His humble servant Robert M. Weigand home to begin eternal life beside his beloved wife Sally. He was a selfless and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to his appreciative family, and a fun-loving and adventuresome friend to many.

A life-long resident of Fort Wayne, Bob was born on May 10, 1930, the son of Joseph and Helen Weigand. From his parents and older brother, James Weigand, Bob learned the value of hard work and a job “done right.”

Bob graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1948, and Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH in 1952 with his bachelor’s degree. While in the 9th grade, Bob worked up the nerve to invite his CCHS classmate Sally Disser to a school dance. They went on to spend 61 wonderful years together after tying the knot at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in October 1954.

Bob and Sally welcomed 6 children into their family. Bob is survived by children Joseph (Lana), Ft. Wayne, IN; William, Seattle, WA; Thomas (Jennifer) Sarasota; FL, John (Kathy) Denver; CO, Jean Morrisey (Kevin) Woodbridge, VA; and Laurence (Monica) Ft. Wayne, IN. Bob and Sally were blessed with 15 grandchildren including Sean (Rachael), Kelley, Kendall (Ben), Erin, Rob (Madeline), Tanner, Jack, Caroline, Julia, Ryan, Shane, Sidney, Stella, Gracie, and Matthew. In his last year, Bob was also blessed with a great-granddaughter, Cora Lynn. Bob is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Sue Libbing and Jo Barger, and many Weigand and Disser nieces and nephews.

Bob started working at Weigand Construction, a fourth-generation General Contractor and Construction Manager, in 1955.  He continued his work in a leadership role as Vice-President of Weigand Const. from the years 1972–1985 and President/Owner from 1985-1993. He was proud to contribute to the construction of many landmark buildings for the Ft. Wayne and surrounding communities (St. Charles Church, St. Judes Church, Bishop Dwenger High School, Original Carroll High School, PFW Theater, Multiple projects for Don Halls Restaurants, Original Lutheran Heart Center, Sacred Heart Church, Multiple projects for Huntington College, Bellmont High School, West Noble High School, Seyferts Potato Chips, and Ft Wayne Neurology)

Bob was a charter member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and he served the Parish in a variety of capacities for over 65 years.  He was an active member of the Building Contractors Association of Northeast Indiana and served on its board of directors for 20 years from 1986-2006 and earned its “Summit Award” in 2004 to honor his contributions to the construction industry and his dedication to the community.  In 2010, Bob and Sally were named recipients of the “Citizens of Two Worlds” award by the Bishop Dwenger community, honoring their tradition of service to others.  Bob had an active philanthropic spirit and especially enjoyed supporting St. Charles School and Church, Bishop Dwenger, Vincent Village, Inc and SCAN among many others.

While his life centered around his family, his work, and his religion, he enjoyed unique hobbies like hot air-ballooning, racing boats, competing in tennis tournaments, and fishing in the waters of N. Indiana, Michigan, Ontario, Florida, and the Pacific Northwest. Bob was always up for a good game of cards, especially euchre. He leaves us all with a sense of tremendous loss, but enriched with many wonderful gifts and incredible memories of a life well-lived.

Visitation is set from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. on April 3, 2020 at Divine Mercy Funeral Home, 3500 Lake Avenue, Ft. Wayne Indiana 46805, and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on April 4, 2020 10:30 am at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 4916 Trier Road, Ft. Wayne,. IN 46915 with visitation one hour prior. Memorial donations be made to Vincent Village 2827 Holton Ave, Ft. Wayne, IN 46806, http://vincentvillage.org/.

Education Projects: The Foundation of Our Communities

Goshen Intermediate School Groundbreaking

Goshen Intermediate School Groundbreaking Ceremony

LARRY WEIGAND, CEO – Our Weigand Why is “We build landmarks that impact the lives and communities we serve.” Many of these landmarks are educational projects, and the impact these upgraded facilities have on our community are paramount for our younger generations. We are fortunate to be very active in building Kindergarten through High School (K-12) and College and University (upper educational) projects throughout Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. In 1982, one of my first jobs at Weigand Construction was an upper education project – working the business end of the broom as part of the “continuous clean” crew at Huntington University. Since then, we have built landmark projects and long standing relationships with many incredible upper education clients such as:

Purdue University (West Lafayette & Fort Wayne Campuses), Indiana Wesleyan University, Indiana University, Grace College, University of Notre Dame, Ball State University, Hillsdale College, Saint Mary’s College, and Andrews University, among others in our region.

As far as K-12 projects, we’ve recently worked with Fort Wayne Community Schools, Southwest Allen County Schools, Northwest Allen County Schools, East Allen County Schools, Adams Central Community Schools, Warsaw Community Schools and Goshen Community Schools… just to name a few.

At Weigand, we are understandably proud that our involvement with educational projects throughout the region is both a result of the longstanding relationships we’ve formed in our communities and our ability to continually exceed client expectations on each and every project. We are excited that Indiana has adopted IC-5-32 which allows public education projects to be contractually delivered with the Construction Manager at Risk method. Weigand Construction Co., Inc has been delivering projects under this contract delivery method for over twenty years for our private clients, so needless to say we have quite a successful track record. To think we have played a small part in helping educate our children and young adults by improving their learning environments with our construction services is really inspiring for our team. I wish all of our friends and co-workers health and happiness as we wrap up 2019!

Barnes & Thornburg Earthwork

We’ve got to go down ⬇️ before we can go up! ⬆️

The earthwork has officially started at the Barnes & Thornburg building site in downtown South Bend. The basement level of the building can accommodate 21 cars and even includes a vehicle elevator, a unique feature that helps conserve that precious square footage.

Partnering in the Downtown Revitalization of South Bend

An Excerpt from our Q2 Newsletter

Larry Weigand

Larry Weigand – CEO

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Weigand’s e-newsletter! This is a fantastic opportunity to connect and communicate quarterly news. I am thrilled to highlight in this issue our people and partnerships within the South Bend region, where Weigand recently expanded our geographic footprint with the opening of a downtown office.

Why South Bend, you might ask? At Weigand, we believe that building partnerships is as important as building projects. In fact, we would say it is foundational to our success as a company. Strong partnerships played a significant role in our decision to expand into the north central Indiana region, where we have been involved in an increasing number of projects in recent years. Opening an office in South Bend allows us to improve upon our existing presence while continuing to provide exceptional service to the Michiana community. The Barnes & Thornburg Building – this issue’s spotlight project – is a case in point of people and partnerships working together to create momentum in a city on the rise.

Similar to other cities across America, South Bend is experiencing a notable urban revitalization. The Barnes & Thornburg Building is the first new office building to be constructed in over 20 years. It is an exciting time, with a strong supply of local projects providing ample opportunity for a variety of relationships to evolve. The city itself is investing nearly $50 million to improve parks, trails and the South Bend riverfront, and neighboring cities in the region are following suit. Young professionals, empty nesters, and even families are looking for downtown housing options that provide them an “authentic” experience, involving the combination of work, life and play. South Bend is striving hard to meet those needs.

The ability to provide our Michiana employees with a permanent home downtown where they can serve lifetime clients as lifetime residents and neighbors only serves to fuel this spirit of collaboration and community. Check out the employee spotlight section to meet our homegrown South Bend team and see our new office!

We continue to move forward with fierce resolve to meet the needs of our clients, our industry partners, and our Weigand team, and we are doing it the Weigand Way – by building landmarks that impact the lives and communities we serve!

Project Spotlight: The Barnes & Thornburg Building

201 S Main

As the first new Class A office building in over 20 years, the construction of The Barnes & Thornburg Building in downtown South Bend is generating a lot of excitement.  The official groundbreaking for this five-story modern glass and steel structure took place on April 9, with Mayor Pete Buttigieg remarking, “This is exactly what we hoped, what we dared to hope, South Bend’s comeback would look like…”  Lou Hansell, managing partner of Bald Mountain LLC, concurred, “It is gratifying to see Barnes & Thornburg’s long-term dedication to a project that will accelerate South Bend’s position as a professional destination.”

201 S Main 2

Located at the southwest corner of Main Street and Jefferson Boulevard across from the federal courthouse, the 64,000 square foot building is in the heart of downtown South Bend’s business core and within walking distance of Weigand’s offices.  Law firm Barnes & Thornburg will lease floors two, three and four of the building, with River Park Leasing Corp occupying the top floor and plans for a drive-thru coffee retailer and restaurant planned for the street level.  Fourth and fifth floor terraces will provide fresh air, city views, and green space to tenants.  The basement level of the building can accommodate 21 cars and boasts a vehicle elevator, a unique feature that helps conserve precious square footage. This city corner is experiencing a major face lift – there is new life where previously a parking lot quietly occupied the space.  Continued growth in the heart of the city is exciting to see, and Weigand Construction South Bend is thrilled to once again be selected to lead this landmark project, a critical component in the city’s ongoing economic surge.
